For this years studio paper we are asked to re-design the foyer space of St James building.
The get away is where I was inspired to step out of my comfort zone of my interests of minimal design and was able to freely play around with colourful colours.
St James Theater is a heritage stage theater and cinema located on Queen St and Lorne St in Auckland. It was built in 1928, its architect was Henry Eli White.
The artist model I chose for this project is Verner Panton, i like how he approaches his projects with the use of colourful colours, textile, and lights.
When Verner Panton said that the main purpose of his work is to provoke people into using their imagination, as most people spend their lives in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colours. I was inspired to step out of my comfort zone and explore beyond my limits.
For my proposal I wanted to design a café intervention, where people can get away from the natural everyday colours they see in their normal everyday lives, and here are some design precedents or inspiration for my site proposal.
After playing around with the site this is what i’ve came up with. As you can see I tried to limit myself from using colours that we see in our normal life such as green, yellow, white, black, blue etc.
Since I am stepping out of my comfort zone I manipulated the movement of the space to have this sort of S curve shape when entering the space, this curve can also be found at the shape of the bar and the door handles both exterior and interior.
I’ve also made sure the space has accessibility hence to why I have installed an elevator and a ramp outside the Lorne St at a gradient of 1:16
And here’s the elevation from the south west and the floor plan
