Week 8: Site intervention

Movement of my intervention:

Since my movement of my interventions isn’t straight I also wanted to incorporate this to the front counter as well as the shape of the entrance door handle

Class activity : What can be used going forward > what the intervention is your designing > who the user/viewer/ occupant is? How will they use the space? What will they need? What will they experience? – you may have to make more than one map

Pitch:

For this year’s studio paper I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and completely design the St James Theater foyer space out of my usual design styles specifically minimal and modern. In order for me to achieve this goal for my artist selection i’ve chosen Verner Panton as my artist, Panton uses alot of bold colours and applies textiles to his work. When Panton said “The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination. Most people spend their lives living in dreary, grey-beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colours, by experimenting with lights, colours, textiles and furniture and utilizing the latest technologies.” From what he stated I was convinced to prove myself that I wasn’t afraid stepping out of my comfort zone and use bold colours. During this paper I learnt so many things about how colours compliments other colours and it’s important to use colours that compliments each other. For my intervention I wanted to design a café intervention inside of the St James foyer space.

While I was in the process of designing the foyer space I noticed that the movement of my space is always in a straight line, so for this project while I’m at it with stepping out of my comfort zone I wanted to go above and beyond with it thus I have designed the movement to be like this slight wave movement and this movement is also applied to the shape of the front counter and the door handle for the foyer entrance.

I’ve also considered accessibility thus to why I have designed an elevator inside of the space and a ramp when entering the space, as according to the normal floor plan there’s one step before entering. In conclusion the overall idea of my studio design is that I wanted to design an intervention where people can chill and surround themselves with bright colourful colours as an escape from the normal dreary colours they see every day (such as white black, sky blue, yellow and green), in doing so I have designed a café for my intervention using bold colours.
